INTERIOR
"The inside of my living body is normally out of the reach of sight. My references for visualizing my own internal shapes, spaces and processes, come from second-hand material: scientific illustrations in anatomy textbooks, or drawings on the packaging of commercially available medicines, like decongestants depicting the respiratory system. These images are based on other human bodies, and help me understand my own feelings, pains, and pleasures as they are sensed internally. They colonize my intimate narratives and personal imaginings, explaining what I experience as a body.Images in anatomy books have historically been developed through the dissection of dead human bodies, mostly male, with the internal pressures, relations and volumes specific to life-functions altered by the end of these processes and the beginning of another: decomposition. The body’s insides exposed were categorized scientifically into distinct functional systems, organized according to mechanistic metaphors and humanist ideals.Contemporary imaging technologies can capture my living skeleton, my functioning brain, and entire body, with MRI, ultrasound and x-rays producing images that slice me into black and white crosssections, revealing the torn tendon, or showing my ovary releasing an egg in grainy detail. Sometimes they show nothing wrong when there is debilitating pain. The drawings and text that compose this book are an experiment into representing my inner body from the perspective of being. They rely on the sounds, sensations, movement, pressures, emotional and functional experiences that frame the unseen parts of my being. The texts began as a tool to facilitate the drawings, after I realized that I could slow my attention down through writing and therefore tease out more details of what I sensed internally – information I had been taught to ignore unless it became an acute pain. The drawings start at my mouth, one of the openings in my head where I transition from what I can see into what I cannot see, from outside to inside. They end at my anus, which is at the center of the book, another passage connecting inside to outside. Instead of denying my understanding of anatomy and biology – both subjects in which I am very interested – I gave myself permission to agree or disagree with objectifying scientific methods of inner body representation. Objective images, as they are currently defined, struggle to represent experiences such as the simultaneity of being both the inside and the outside of a body. They fail the tactile experience of holding – sensing the back as well as the front of a form – of self-touch, and the experiences of pain, pleasure, or hunger, as these things are lived, not othered or exteriorized. This book is my attempt to negotiate more visual terrain for the lived experience of the inner body."Juliana Cerqueira Leite -
